Ashley explains that recording from her car is the lowest-barrier way to actually get it done, drawing a direct parallel to how she keeps workouts in her calendar to prevent her ADHD brain from skipping them.
So let me get this straight. You talk to us from
your car? What's up, my movers and shakers? Famous
Ashley Grant here. Welcome to More Movement,
Please, the podcast where I hope to inspire you
to move your body more. So today I kind of want
to talk about the story behind the mess and the
mess being me and this podcast. Why is it not
a more professional show? Why is it not more?
produced and highly curated and all that jazz.
And I kind of want to tell you guys exactly what's
going on. Reader's Digest version. The reason
that I record this podcast from my car most of
the time is because it's the way I get it done.
It's kind of like with the working out. I have
to do things a certain way to make sure they
get done. I keep all of the the working out in
my calendar because if it's not in the calendar,
it will not happen. I know this about myself.
This is something I have learned that if I don't
have an appointment with myself, I will talk
myself out of it. I will tell or I'll forget
about it completely. I mean, that's the ADHD
brain in me, but it's just the facts that I have
to have these things in my calendar or they do
not exist. With the recording in my car, it is
the lowest barrier to entry to make sure that
I get my story out there. I chose to record from
my car simply because I knew that that would
actually make me do it. And so every single time
I'm on my way to the gym or on my way home, I
always have my podcast microphones in my car
with me so that I can easily plug them into my
phone and just riff on the mic. Just get going.
And I can stop anywhere. And if I need to interview
someone, I can do it because the microphones
that I have. I can clip onto myself and another
person and they both connect to my phone easily.
It's a very simple way to just get it going.
And so the big thing that I want you to take
away from this is not so much that I'm recording
it from my car. It's that I am taking away every
excuse I could possibly have to keep me from
doing it. And so it's the same with fitness.
I have to take away all excuses and make myself
do the work. And the best way to do that is to
set myself up for success. So if you are listening
to this and you're considering getting started
with your fitness journey, add it to your calendar,
make an appointment with yourself, start getting
your clothes out the night before, start making
the plan the day before, or even a week ahead
if you need to. Whatever you've got to do to
make it so that you actually do the work, start
doing it. If you have a fitness goal, You just
got to plan for it. Because what is it that saying
is? A dream without a plan is just a wish. Make
it happen. Make a plan. Get to work. Same thing
with any dream you may have for your career or
your home life. Whatever it may be, if you start
removing those barriers, it's that much easier
to get stuff done. And that's the whole reason
that this podcast is recorded from my car. The
other reason, I'll be honest with you guys, is
because... I don't want to forget what I'm thinking
whenever I'm thinking it. I want to actually
Ashley argues that keeping the podcast raw and unpolished is a deliberate choice — she doesn't want it to become a 'polished, curated lie' like the fitness content that makes people feel like they can never measure up.
be able to quickly say what's in my mind so that
you get the raw and the real and the mess, honestly.
You get the, while I'm in the thick of things,
while I'm thinking about things, you hear them
as they are in real time so that you don't get
a polished, curated lie. And unfortunately, I
have to just put it that way because the truth
is... Some of the fitness content that I consume,
it is so highly polished that it feels like nobody
can live up to that level of standard. And so
this podcast will never be a perfectly polished,
beautiful thing. It's always going to be a mess.
And that's because it's real. It's raw and it's
real. And I never want to lose that because I
can't help but feel like if I start making this
a perfect polished thing, that it will start
becoming a lie. it will start feeling unachievable.
And I want you guys to know I'm in the mess with
you. This is raw and real because it's what I'm
actually going through. This isn't something
where I'm putting together a perfect highlight
reel that you're gonna see on social media and
feel like crap about yourself. This is what's
actually happening. That's why I share the failures.
It's why I share the wins. And it's why I don't
ever intend to stop doing it the way that I'm
doing it. And honestly, if it starts feeling
too polished, I kind of want to be called out
on it because I don't want this to feel unachievable.
I don't want this to feel like something you
can't do because you can do it. And I believe
in you and I want you to get started right now.
I don't care if you don't have the perfect gym
clothes. I don't care if you don't have the perfect
water bottle and the most adorable thing that
you saw on the TikTok shop or the Instagram shop
or whatever it may be. You don't have to be.
Ashley pushes back on the idea that you need perfect gym clothes or a matching outfit to work out, referencing a joke with her husband about 'Fitness Barbie' gear she spotted online.
Fitness Barbie. I mean, that's kind of been a
joke that I've been having with my husband lately
because I was looking at some different workout
gear and I was like, oh my goodness, if I wore
this, I would look like Fitness Barbie. There's
nothing wrong with looking like Fitness Barbie
if you want to, but don't let that impression,
that idea that you have in your head of what
you're supposed to look like stop you from working
out. I want you to just go and do it. Like, I
don't care what you're wearing. Obviously, please
wear clothes. But I want you to actually just
put in the work. So don't make it polished. It
doesn't have to be. I don't care if your hair
is not done. I don't care if you're not wearing
nail polish. I don't care, you know, if you have
the perfect shoes or the cutest matching outfit.
The whole point is start putting in the work.
The only person holding you back is you. And
I don't want that for you. I want you to start
putting in the work. Show up for yourself. Do
it messy. Do it raw. Do it real. Just do it.
Ashley marks episode 100 and day 365 of the podcast, announces a return to a Monday/Wednesday release schedule, and promotes the free Patreon community with upcoming workouts from Rhonda Good.
