What Babies Know About Movement That We Forgot
▸ Show notes from the creator
Babies never worry about how their bodies look. They just eat when they're hungry, stop when they're full, and move because it feels good. In this episode, Ashley shares a voice note from Shirley Billigmeier, founder of Energetics, who breaks down why we're born knowing exactly how to listen to our bodies, and how life slowly teaches us to ignore that wisdom. Shirley talks about trusting your own signals over outside noise, why nutrition research keeps flip-flopping, and how reconnecting with your natural instincts can bring the joy back into eating and moving. Ashley adds her own take on how small daily choices, like what you pack for a road trip, train your brain toward better habits over time. If you've ever felt disconnected from your own hunger, fullness, or desire to move, this one is for you.

Maybe we could learn a thing or two from children
00:01
about fitness and nutrition. What's up, you guys?
00:10
Famous Sasha Grant here. Welcome to More Movement,
00:11
Please, the podcast where I hope to inspire you
00:13
to move your body more. Today, I have another
00:15
voice note for you, and this one comes to us
00:17
from Shirley Billigmeyer, and here's what she
00:19
had to say. I'm Shirley Billigmeyer, the founder.
00:22
of energetics. Energetics is inner spelled I
00:26
-N -N -E -R because it is your own energy from
00:30
within, your choice. And this is key regardless
00:33
if it is your choice of what you are eating or
00:36
how you are moving. Choice is your identity and
00:40
it is important to own what gives you life, food,
00:42
and how you move forward in life, both physically
00:45
and mentally. And once you are choosing what
00:49
to eat and how to move, you own it. and it will
00:52
become permanent and pleasurable. We are born
00:56
with our own eating boundaries and the desire
00:58
to move. Think of an infant. They know when they
01:01
are hungry, they want to start eating. And they
01:05
certainly know when they are no longer hungry,
01:07
they want to stop eating. And they will be quite
01:11
forceful in their desire to stop eating. They
01:14
will spit it out, throw it, clench those little
01:17
lips to tell you they want to stop eating. and
01:21
they could care less about their weight or their
01:24
diaper size. They simply want to stop eating.
01:27
We were also born with over 10 ,000 taste buds,
01:31
unique to each and every one of us, to let us
01:34
know what feels good to us. True health, how
01:38
you feel. It is why the research keeps changing.
01:41
The research isn't wrong. It depends on how that
01:44
group of people responds to a particular food
01:47
or group of foods in the study. For example,
01:50
if you read that shrimp is healthy, yet when
01:53
you eat it, you have a reaction, who really is
01:56
the final authority? You are. In addition, have
02:01
you ever seen an infant not want to learn and
02:04
get moving? It is our natural desire to want
02:07
to learn and move. So what happened to our natural
02:10
eating boundaries and our desire to move? We
02:13
just stopped listening to ourselves and stopped.
02:17
making our own choices. And we left the one place
02:21
that had all the answers, our gut brain, our
02:24
own wisdom, our own selves that houses our identity
02:28
created from total and complete choice of what
02:32
we eat and how we decide our movement. And once
02:35
we reclaim it, we reclaim the joy of eating and
02:38
the joy of movement and the joy of living in
02:41
a body you love living in without storage, which
02:45
is my term for fat, because it is truly stored
02:48
information. You can follow me on Instagram at

02:58
So I find that kind of fascinating, what Shirley
03:01
said about the fact that we could actually learn
03:03
something from children, basically. Because when
03:06
you really think about it, our food, our nutrition,
03:09
our movement, it really was something that was
03:12
like nurtured. Nature tells us, you know, we
03:18
want to move our bodies more and that we want
03:19
to eat things that are feeling good to us and
03:22
healthy for us. But nurture is what. kind of
03:26
creeps up on us and makes us think that, well,
03:29
okay, if everybody else is drinking sodas, I
03:31
drink sodas. Or if I'm served a bunch of sugar,
03:35
I'm supposed to consume a bunch of sugar. And
03:37
at some point, you have to make a decision for
03:40
yourself. You have to decide that you want to
03:42
kind of go back to the better way of doing things,
03:46
which is moving your body more and consuming
03:48
foods that are good for you. And I said something
03:51
about this recently. that you know for my road
03:54
trip we chose to pack snacks that were a little
03:58
bit healthier and you know not just a bunch of
04:02
crap because that's one thing that's really bad
04:03
about road trips is that it's very easy to just
04:06
reach for chips and cookies and candy bars and
04:08
all kinds of junk but if you're constantly reaching
04:12
for junk then you're training your brain and
04:14
your body that you want junk But if you are reaching
04:17
for healthier foods, you're training your mind
04:20
and your body that you want healthier foods.
04:22
So I really like what Shirley had to say. I hope
04:24
you guys enjoyed it too. And if y 'all want to
04:28
leave a voice note for me too, to be featured
04:30
